The importance of of art in interiors

Art plays a vital role in interior design as it can add personality, character, and meaning to a space. Incorporating art into interior design can create a focal point or a visual interest in a room, and it can also set the mood and atmosphere of the space.

Here are some reasons why art is important in interior design:

1. Adds Personality: Art is a reflection of one’s personality and style, and it can add a personal touch to a space. Whether it’s a painting, sculpture, or a photograph, the artwork can express the owner’s taste and interests.

2. Enhances Visual Appeal: Artwork can serve as a focal point and add visual interest to a room. It can also bring together different design elements, colors, and textures in a harmonious way.

3. Sets the Mood: Artwork can set the tone for a room, creating a specific ambiance or mood. For instance, a bright and colorful piece of art can create a lively and energetic atmosphere, while a calming abstract piece can make a space more tranquil.

4. Adds Value: Artwork is an investment that can appreciate over time, and it can add value to a space. A unique and original piece of art can also make a home stand out and be more attractive to potential buyers.

There are other ways art can affect your experience of a space, sometimes it adds drama to a space or tells a story, other times is serves as an object of discussion indirectly making a space less boring. There was a story of a high rise building which had a slow lift, the owner was required to change the lift but as there was paucity of funds his designer advised upgrading the interior of the lift instead of changing it, making it brighter, placing artwork etc… they did. The users later confirmed the lift was faster than before. What happened was a psychological effect of the space enhanced the users experience.
Also art may take the user into another world by making the viewer ask… “what does this painting mean or portray”. You are in a space but your imagination has taken you to another place. A subtle example is this painting below.
Realism (art which looks photographic or real) makes users appreciate the art work as it is but impressionism and abstract (art which only creates an impression of something) mostly takes the curious viewer to the realm of imagination.
In summary, incorporating art into interior design is essential to creating a well-designed and visually appealing space that reflects the owner’s personality and style while setting the mood and adding value to the home.
