How to Calculate Tile Square Area for a Building
Tiling is an essential part of finishing which serves as a covering to floors and wet areas hence most projects have need for tiles. Accurately calculating tile area for your building project is essential for cost estimation, material planning, and minimizing waste in any project. Whether you’re working on floors, walls, or outdoor paving, mastering this process will save both time and money.
1. Understand the Basics: Area Calculation
At its core, tile estimation is based on surface area.
Floor area Formula:
Area=Length×Width
You can measure in meters (m) or feet (ft) .Result will be in square meters (m²) or square feet (ft²)
2. Measure the Space
For Rectangular Areas:
• Measure the length and width of the floor or wall.
Example:
• Room size = 5m × 4m
• Area = 20 m²
For Irregular Spaces:
Break the area into smaller shapes:
• Rectangles
• Squares
• Triangles (if needed)
Then sum all areas.
3. Calculate Skirting
If you are using tiles as your skirting, you have to add the skirting tiles to the calculation. Otherwise you stop at only the floor tiles. Other materials such as wood, plastics or polysterene can be used for skirting. Skirtings are generally 0.1 m high (4 inches, 10cm or 100mm)
Skirting Formula:
Room perimeter X 0.01
Example if a room has a perimeter of 18m, Skirting area is
18m x 0.1m= 1.8 m2
4. Calculate tiles walls for baths, kitchens and wet areas
Wall Formula:
(Room perimeter X height of room) – area of doors, windows and openings.
For wall tiles, take the perimeter of the room and multiply by the room height (most buildings are 3 meters but may be more or less). Then subtract the areas for doors, windows or other openings.
5. Add Wastage Factor
Always include extra tiles for:
• Offcuts
• Breakage
• Future repairs
Recommended:
• +10% for simple layouts
